Fiber Optic Termination Machine and Cold Splice

Fiber Optic Termination Machine and Cold Splice

A fiber optic cold splicer is a device used to join two optical fibers quickly and efficiently without fusion, using precise alignment and snap-in connectors. What is Cold Splicing?Cold splicing, also known as mechanical splicing, is a method of joining two optical fibers without using heat or fusion. Unlike fusion splicing, which melts the fiber ends together, cold splicing relies on a precise alignment mechanism, typically a v-groove, to hold the fibers in place and ensure proper light transmission . This method is particularly useful for field installations where speed, convenience, and minimal equipment are priorities. How a Cold Splicer WorksA fiber optic cold splicer operates by aligning the bare ends of two fibers inside a connector or splicing device. The main steps include :Install the cold connector and secure the snap rings on both sides.Strip the fiber about 3 cm and clean it with alcohol.Cut the fiber to the required length (approximately 1.4 cm).Insert one fiber end into the cold connector.Repeat the stripping, cleaning, and cutting for the other fiber end.Insert the second fiber into the connector, ensuring both fibers are snapped into the central alignment slot.Tighten the snap rings and test the connection to confirm successful splicing. This process is faster and easier than fusion splicing, requires minimal equipment (mainly a fiber cutter and the cold splicer), and is suitable for FTTH deployments and other field applications .Advantages of Cold SplicingEase of operation: Requires less technical skill than fusion splicing.Low equipment cost: No expensive fusion splicer or power source is needed.Quick installation: Ideal for field work and rapid deployment.Reusability: Some cold splice connectors can be removed or adjusted if needed.Suitable for FTTH: Supports high-density residential fiber installations efficiently .Comparison with Fusion SplicingFeatureCold SpliceFusion SpliceEquipmentMinimal (cold splicer, fiber cutter)Fusion splicer, fiber cleaver, power sourceConnection TypeMechanical alignmentHeat-fused permanent jointSignal LossSlightly higher (~0.1–0.3 dB)Very low (~0.03–0.05 dB)SpeedFaster in fieldSlower due to preparation and fusionCostLowerHigherReversibilityCan be adjustedPermanentCold splicing is ideal for temporary or quick field connections, while fusion splicing is preferred for permanent, high-performance installations .ApplicationsCold splicing is widely used in:FTTH networks for residential fiber connections.Field repairs where fusion splicing is impractical.Temporary or emergency fiber connections.High-density patch panels where quick installation is needed . In summary, a fiber optic cold splicer provides a practical, cost-effective, and fast solution for joining fibers in the field, making it an essential tool for modern fiber optic deployments.
