Advantages of Insert-Type Optical Splitters

Advantages of Insert-Type Optical Splitters

Insert-type optical splitters are compact, high-reliability devices that distribute optical signals from a single input to multiple outputs with low insertion loss and uniform power splitting.Key Features1. Compact and Modular Design Insert-type splitters are designed to fit into racks or modules, allowing easy installation and maintenance in central offices or distribution cabinets. They are typically housed in a standardized insert-type rack, which supports multiple splitters in a single frame for efficient space utilization . 2. Passive Optical Power Distribution These splitters are passive devices that do not require power. They distribute downstream signals from the OLT (Optical Line Terminal) to multiple ONUs (Optical Network Units) and combine upstream signals back to the OLT. The optical power is divided according to the specified split ratio, such as 1x2, 1x4, 1x8, 1x16, 1x32, or even higher . 3. Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Technology Most insert-type splitters use PLC technology, which provides high reliability, wide operating wavelength range, low insertion loss, low polarization-dependent loss, and excellent channel-to-channel uniformity. This ensures consistent signal quality across all output ports . 4. Flexible Split Ratios The split ratio determines how optical power is distributed among output ports. Insert-type splitters support both standard and custom ratios, allowing network designers to optimize signal strength and bandwidth allocation for FTTH, FTTB+LAN, or other PON deployments . 5. High Return Loss and Low Insertion Loss Insert-type splitters are engineered for low insertion loss, typically around 0.2–0.5 dB per connector, and high return loss (≥50 dB for UPC, ≥55 dB for APC), minimizing signal degradation and reflections in the network . 6. Centralized and Distributed Deployment These splitters can be deployed in centralized locations (central office or main cabinet) or distributed across the network (closers or pedestals). Centralized deployment allows flexible customer-to-splitter assignment via jumpers, while distributed deployment is fixed once installed . 7. Scalability and Network Optimization Insert-type splitters enable network scalability by supporting multi-stage splitting, which is useful when fiber cores are limited or ONUs are widely dispersed. They help reduce fiber count, network footprint, and overall deployment cost . 8. Compliance and Reliability High-quality insert-type splitters meet industry standards such as GR-1209-CORE and GR-1221-CORE, ensuring long-term reliability and compatibility with GPON, XGS-PON, and emerging high-speed PON standards . In summary, insert-type optical splitters are compact, passive, and highly reliable devices that efficiently manage optical signal distribution in PON networks, offering flexibility in split ratios, low insertion loss, and modular deployment for both centralized and distributed network architectures.
