Optical cables transmit light signals through glass or plastic fibers, while electrical wires conduct electricity through metal conductors, and each is governed by distinct structural and regulatory standards.Key Structural DifferencesOptical cables are designed for light-based signal transmission and consist of a core (glass or plastic fiber), strength members (e.g., steel wire), fillers, water-blocking materials, buffering layers, and an outer sheath. They rely on total internal reflection to transmit light over long distances with minimal loss, offering high bandwidth and smaller diameters compared to electrical cables (Hone Cable) . Electrical wires consist of one or more metal conductors (copper, aluminum, silver, etc.) insulated with protective jackets. They transmit electrical current or signals and are categorized into power cables, control cables, coaxial cables, fire-resistant cables, and more. Their diameter is generally larger due to the metal conductor and insulation requirements, and they are more susceptible to RF interference and signal loss over long distances .Regulatory and Standardization FrameworksElectrical cables are subject to standards such as UL, CSA, VDE, and HAR, which define safety, fire behavior, voltage ratings, and temperature limits.
