Requirements for wiring cabinets in low-voltage power distribution rooms

Requirements for wiring cabinets in low-voltage power distribution rooms

Low-voltage wiring cabinets must be arranged to ensure safe access, proper clearances, and compliance with IEC standards, with minimum aisle widths, rear clearances, and maintenance accessibility carefully observed.General Layout GuidelinesAisle Widths and Accessibility:For single-row layouts, maintain a minimum operating aisle of 2 meters in front of the panels; for double-row layouts, 2.5 meters is recommended, with adjustments for larger installations to ensure safe movement and maintenance access .When low-voltage switchgear is installed against walls, a rear clearance of approximately 1 meter is required to allow cable connections and ventilation .If the room serves as an on-duty or operational space, the distance from the front of the switchboard to the wall should preferably be no less than 3 meters . Panel Arrangement:Single-front installations place all cubicles in a row facing the operating aisle.Double-front installations allow cubicles to be positioned in rows next to and behind one another, sharing a main busbar system for efficiency. The width of the double-front unit is determined by the widest panel, and additional cubicles on the opposite side must sum to the same width .Protective panels should be installed at both ends of the row if passages are present, and single-side maintenance against a wall is acceptable only when there are three or fewer switchboards . Doors and Exits:For rooms longer than 8 meters, two doors are recommended, preferably at opposite ends.If only one door is installed, it should not open directly into a high-voltage switchgear room. For low-voltage switchgear rows exceeding 6 meters, two exits behind the panels should lead to the same or another room to ensure safe egress . Clearances for Safety and Maintenance:Space above panels must remain free to allow pressure relief vents to operate in case of arcing faults .Door widths should allow a minimum 90° opening to facilitate safe access and maintenance .Minimum clearances between switchgear and obstacles must follow manufacturer specifications and IEC 60364-7-729 standards . Fire and Electrical Safety Considerations:Fire-resistant barriers or partition walls should be installed at busbar segmentation points for equipment supplying critical loads .Ensure proper earthing, protection against electric shocks, and coordination of residual current devices (RCDs) according to IEC standards . Cable Management:Cable trenches should have a slope and sump pits for drainage, with covers preferably made of checkered steel plate .Inspection pits beneath adjacent switchgear units should be separated by brick walls to prevent interference and ensure safety . Compliance and Standards:All layouts should comply with IEC 61439 for low-voltage switchgear assemblies, including temperature-rise, short-circuit withstand, and internal connection requirements .Consider manufacturer-specific requirements for panel width, component density, and cable connection cross-sections to ensure proper installation and operation . By following these guidelines, low-voltage equipment rooms can achieve safe, accessible, and standard-compliant layouts that facilitate maintenance, operational efficiency, and personnel safety.
