Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) OPGW cables combine optical fibers with a metallic ground wire, typically installed at the top of transmission towers. The optical fibers are housed in a sealed metal tube surrounded by steel strength members and aluminum conductors. This design allows the cable to serve both as a grounding conductor and a high-speed communication link. OPGW is immune to electrical interference and is widely used for long-distance, high-capacity communication along power lines . 2. Optical Power Phase Conductor (OPPC) OPPC cables integrate optical fibers directly into the phase conductors of power lines. Like OPGW, the fibers are protected in a central tube and surrounded by conductive and strength materials. OPPC allows utilities to transmit data without requiring separate communication lines, making it suitable for both new installations and upgrades of existing power lines . 3. Optical Power Attached Cable (OPAC) OPAC is a lightweight, all-dielectric fiber optic cable that is wrapped around existing power or ground conductors. Installation is often done using a "Sky-Wrap" method, where the cable is helically wrapped around the host conductor. OPAC is ideal for expanding communication capacity on existing lines without major infrastructure changes.
