Metallic trays must be grounded and bonded according to NEC Article 250.96, regardless of whether the tray itself serves as the equipment grounding conductor (EGC), . Non-metallic trays do not serve as conductors and require separate grounding measures if needed.Grounding and BondingProper grounding is critical for safety. Cable trays can serve as the EGC in qualifying installations, but the tray must be electrically continuous and bonded at joints .
