Pioneers of Fiber Optic Communication

Narinder Singh Kapany is widely recognized as the pioneer of fiber optic communication, often called the "Father of Fiber Optics."Narinder Singh Kapany, an Indian-American physicist, made groundbreaking contributions to the development of fiber optics in the 1950s. While studying at Imperial College London, Kapany demonstrated that light could be transmitted through flexible glass fibers, a feat previously thought impossible, and coined the term "fiber optics" in 1960, publishing his pioneering work in Scientific American . His research laid the foundation for modern optical communication, enabling applications in telecommunications, medicine, and other industries . Kapany's early experiments, conducted with Harold Hopkins, involved transmitting images through bundles of optical fibers, achieving unprecedented image quality for the time . This work transformed fiber optics from a theoretical concept into a practical technology. While Kapany pioneered the concept and early demonstrations, Charles Kuen Kao later advanced the field by showing that optical fibers could transmit signals over long distances if made from high-purity glass, overcoming the problem of signal loss . Kao's work, along with the development of low-loss fibers by Robert Maurer, Donald Keck, and Peter Schultz at Corning, made long-distance fiber-optic communication feasible and commercially viable . Kapany's contributions earned him recognition as a key figure in optical communication, and he was posthumously awarded India's Padma Vibhushan in 2021 .
