Bare fiber optic pigtails

Bare fiber optic pigtails

A bare fiber optic pigtail is a short fiber cable with a factory-terminated connector on one end and an exposed, unjacketed fiber on the other, designed for splicing into a fiber network.Definition and StructureA fiber optic pigtail is typically 0.5 to 2 meters long and features a factory-installed connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other end, which is left unjacketed and exposed for splicing into a fiber optic cable in the field . The connector end is polished and tested under factory conditions to ensure low insertion loss and high return loss, while the bare fiber end allows for fusion or mechanical splicing to the main fiber network .Differences from Patch CordsUnlike fiber patch cords, which have connectors on both ends, pigtails have only one connector and one bare fiber end . Patch cords are used for connecting equipment or patch panels directly, whereas pigtails are used to terminate bulk fiber cables at an Optical Distribution Frame (ODF), terminal box, or splice closure . Pigtails often use unjacketed fiber with a 90µm diameter, while patch cords typically use jacketed fiber cables of 2.0–3.0 mm diameter .ApplicationsBare fiber optic pigtails are essential in scenarios where fibers from a large cable need to be terminated reliably. They are widely used in:Data centers for ODF terminationsFTTH (Fiber to the Home) drop cable connectionsTelecom networks for splicing into backbone or distribution cablesHigh-density installations where factory-quality connectors reduce installation time and improve long-term performance Connector Types and Fiber ModesPigtails come in various connector types such as SC, LC, ST, and FC, with polish options like UPC or APC . They are available in single-mode (OS2, 9/125µm) for long-distance, high-bandwidth applications, and multimode (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4) for shorter-distance networks .AdvantagesUsing bare fiber pigtails offers several benefits over field-terminated connectors:Factory-grade connector quality ensures consistent performanceTime and labor savings during installationFlexibility to splice into any cable systemReduced signal loss and back reflection compared to field-installed connectors In summary, bare fiber optic pigtails are a critical component in structured cabling, providing a reliable, high-performance interface between bulk fiber cables and network equipment while simplifying installation and maintenance.
