Fiber Optic Information Transmission Capacity

Modern fiber-optic systems can achieve data transmission rates exceeding 1 petabit per second, with theoretical limits approaching the Shannon capacity for single-mode fibers.Current Record AchievementsRecent experiments have demonstrated extraordinary transmission capacities using advanced fiber technologies:1.02 petabits per second over 1,808 km was achieved using a 19-core optical fiber with a standard 0.125 mm cladding diameter, setting a new world record for the capacity-distance product at 1.86 exabits per second-km. This was accomplished by optimizing core arrangement and using simultaneous amplification across all cores, demonstrating the potential of multi-core fibers for long-distance, high-capacity transmission (Sumitomo Electric and NICT, 2025) .450 terabits per second over a field-deployed metropolitan fiber link in London was achieved using multi-band wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) across the O-, E-, S-, C-, and L-bands, covering 42.4 THz of bandwidth. This experiment used real-world fibers with splices and connectors, showing that ultra-high-capacity transmission is feasible in existing infrastructure (NICT, 2026) .Laboratory experiments have also reached 378.9 Tbps over 50 km using a 37.6 THz frequency band, the largest bandwidth demonstrated in optical fiber transmission to date .Theoretical ConsiderationsThe information capacity of a fiber-optic channel is fundamentally limited by the Shannon limit, which depends on the signal-to-noise ratio and available bandwidth. For terrestrial single-mode fibers, record experiments are currently within 20–30% of these theoretical limits, indicating that practical systems are approaching the maximum achievable throughput . To further scale capacity, researchers are exploring:Space-division multiplexing (SDM): Using multi-core or multi-mode fibers to transmit multiple independent data streams in parallel.Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM): Expanding the usable spectrum across multiple bands (O, E, S, C, L, U) to increase total data throughput.Advanced modulation formats: Such as dual-polarization 256-QAM, 64-QAM, and QPSK, which increase bits per symbol and improve spectral efficiency .Practical ImplicationsFiber-optic communication remains the backbone of global telecommunications due to its high bandwidth, long-distance capability, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. With ongoing research in multi-core fibers, ultra-wideband amplification, and multi-band WDM, the capacity of optical networks is expected to continue growing, supporting future demands from AI services, beyond-5G mobile networks, and high-definition media streaming . In summary, fiber-optic systems today can transmit data at hundreds of terabits to over a petabit per second, and with emerging technologies, the practical and theoretical limits of fiber capacity are being pushed closer to the Shannon limit, enabling unprecedented global communication capabilities.
