How to test packet loss in optical modules

Packet loss in optical modules can be diagnosed by monitoring interface statistics, measuring optical power, checking insertion loss, and inspecting the module and fiber connections.Step 1: Monitor Interface StatisticsCheck the network device for CRC errors, dropped packets, or interface errors. Many switches and routers provide commands to display interface statistics, which can indicate packet loss caused by optical issues. For example, on Huawei devices, the display interface transceiver verbose command shows transmit and receive optical power, while display interface can reveal CRC errors or packet drops .Step 2: Measure Optical PowerUse an optical power meter to measure the received optical power at the far end of the fiber. Compare the measured power with the nominal values specified for the optical module. Low received power can indicate high insertion loss, dirty connectors, or fiber bending, all of which can cause packet loss .Step 3: Check Insertion LossInsertion loss (IL) is the reduction in signal power along the fiber link. Excessive IL can reduce the signal below the module's sensitivity threshold, leading to higher bit-error rates and packet loss. Measure IL using an Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) or estimate it with an OTDR.
