Distribution box outgoing interface label

Distribution box outgoing interface label

Outgoing interface labels in a distribution box identify the label-switched path (LSP) used to forward packets to the next hop in an MPLS network. In an MPLS-enabled distribution box or router, each outgoing interface is associated with a label that determines how packets are forwarded. When a packet arrives, the router examines the incoming label, looks it up in the Label Information Base (LIB), and determines the outgoing interface and the new label to push, swap, or pop for the next hop . These labels are locally significant, meaning the incoming label is only meaningful to the local router, while the outgoing label is assigned from the router's local pool for the next LSR along the path .Label Assignment and Interface MappingPer-Platform Label Space: A single label is assigned to a destination network and advertised to all neighbors. This label is valid across all incoming interfaces .Per-Interface Label Space: Labels are assigned on a per-interface basis for each IP destination prefix. Each interface maintains its own set of unique labels .Label Distribution Protocol (LDP): LDP automatically generates and exchanges labels between routers. Routers advertise outgoing labels to neighbors after establishing LDP sessions, typically using loopback addresses for transport and UDP multicast for discovery .Forwarding ProcessPacket Arrival: The router receives a packet with an MPLS label.Label Lookup: The incoming label is checked in the local switching table.Outgoing Interface Determination: The table indicates which outgoing interface to use and the label to assign for the next hop.Label Action: The router may push a new label, swap the label with another, or pop it if it is the egress node .Forwarding: The packet is sent out the designated interface with the correct outgoing label.Practical ImplicationsOutgoing interface labels are crucial for ensuring correct packet forwarding along the LSP.They allow multiple LSPs to share the same physical interface while maintaining separate forwarding paths.Proper labeling ensures traffic separation, efficient routing, and compatibility with VPNs in MPLS networks . In summary, the outgoing interface label in a distribution box is a locally assigned identifier that tells the router which interface to forward a packet through and what label to use for the next hop, forming the core of MPLS label switching and path management.
